John Craven OBE speaks at Celebration Event Thursday 26th March 2009
John Craven OBE, most recently known for fronting the BBC's Countryfile, recently joined entrepreneurs from the region's rural tourism sector at a Celebration Event at Lakewood Conference Centre organised by the Rural Tourism Network.

John Craven kicked the day off by speaking about his background and passion for the great British countryside, along with his vision that sees many of us ‘Holidaying at Home‘ in 2009. This sparked some great questions from the delegates who enjoyed the chance to directly quiz John on his experience of the countryside.
The second speaker of the day was Annette Cole (Deputy Director, Head of Research and Development) of South West Tourism who spoke about the challenges and opportunities for rural tourism businesses in the South West, from climate change to the high quality of the rural tourism sector and the perceptions of visitors to words used to describe what’s on offer. Annette provided some great ideas to improve business, by having a greater understanding of the regional tourism industry. Businesses were also encouraged to focus on providing the best quality possible to visitors, and working with other local businesses to add value and support the local economy in difficult economic times.
Finally, Adrian Boots of Walk the Mendips addressed the group. Adrian has been involved with the Rural Tourism Network from the very first meeting in January 2008, and shared his experiences of setting up a small rural tourism business. Offering themed guided walks on the Mendip Hills was where his business began. Over the last few years the product developed and with the funding provided by the Rural Tourism Network in 2008 Adrian explained how he was more easily able to develop a brand, and website. The networking and skills development opportunities provided by the Rural Tourism Network were highlighted by Adrian as a great help in the development of his business.
Lively discussions followed each speaker and feedback from delegates proved excellent. Delegates were treated to a wonderful two course lunch of local roast beef whilst taking in the fantastic views of Blagdon Lake. Some of the delegates extended their experience and chose to visit Lakewood’s Eco-Barn, their carbon neutral meeting venue.
Although the Rural Tourism Network funding comes to an end on 31st March 2009, the Regional Tourism Skills Network South West team will continue to support tourism businesses and provide a range of events, networking opportunities and support in the coming year.
